Eclipse, 20x24 Acrylic, © 2024, Lelia Canter.
Eclipse commemorates the Great North American Solar Eclipse of April 8, 2024.
The eclipse was visible across a band covering parts of North American from Mexico to Canada and crossing over the United States. The next solar eclipse of similar width will take place on August 12, 2045.
The Cherokee word for eclipse is nvdo tsulisihvsgiyi which means “the time when the sun or moon get dark”. The legend of the Cherokee tells of a giant frog (walosi) eating the sun. Long ago, during an eclipse, the Cherokee would make noise to scare away the giant frog by banging rocks together, shaking shells, beating drums, and shouting.
With a closer look, you may be able to see the sun-eating frog (walosi) hiding in the clouds in the upper right hand corner of the painting.
To many cultures, a total solar eclipse holds spiritual significance. It symbolizes a time of darkness and spiritual renewal, offering an opportunity for introspection and the shedding of old energies.
